Abbey Lee 19 lives in London. She is a passionate electronic music fan; her favourite genre of electronic music is House Music. She is a first year student in university; her scene is nightclubs and raves. She attends all her favourite DJs gigs/concerts. Her favourite artists/djs are Deadmau5, Benny Benassi, Dafts Punk and LaLa. Abbey Lee loves reading magazines such as RAVER. Abbey Lee has a collection of RAVER magazines, however mainly buying them only for the posters and the free CD tracks they offer every two months. Abbey Lee and her boyfriend attend local DJ gigs and often help out at the local music store on the weekends. Her circle of friends all enjoy House Music and also most of the rest of the students at her University listen to it too. Abbey Lee's view on House Music is that it is a growing genre where there are more younger fans. Abbey Lee also likes to dress like the female DJs and fellow ravers displayed in RAVER magazine and gets her style inspiration from RAVER as there is a style section in the magazine. Abbey Lee is seen as the leading light and the one everyone in her peer group look up to and often sets the fashion and music taste of the group, the music she has on her iPod is well applauded and and respected amongst her group.

Generic Conventions of Music Magazines

Generic Conventions of music magazines
Billboard magazine

One of the most generic conventions of Billboard Magazine, and in most music magazines, is the title head of the magazine. They maintain consistency by using exactly the same font, they do this so that the audience can recognise the magazine really easily. The title is bold, big, eye-catching and is placed in the centre and top of the magazine. This is done so that the readers will know that the masthead will be there, so that it isn’t always necessary to have it completely on show. Sometimes the central figures partially cover it like in the examples above.
The central figure/s help to maintain a stereotype, as well as customer loyalty. They are always current and popular and mostly all pop icons, such as Adele and Rihanna. The central figures are usually made up and made to look glamourous.
Customer loyalty is maintained primarily by maintaining features from issue to issue. These include interviews with and articles about current and relative artists, gig listings and posters. In my opinion, I think that Billboard is aimed mainly at females and males from teenager years to late thirties

On a typical Music Magazine Double Page Spread, there is always a main picture, title and column text. These are all generic conventions of what a music magazine typically looks like. The title is always bold and eye-catching and there is always a consistency in fonts. The main picture is an image of the artist/band which is featured on the front cover of the magazine. The double page spread is usually an interview with the artist or a description of what the artist is currently doing.

The contents page of a music magazine is very generic and most magazines are very similar. There is always a variety of photos so that the reader can have insight in what will be in the magazine, the page is split up into grids and sections, and there is always a list of page numbers and what is the pages about. There is also a main picture used in the contents page which is usually a picture of the artist or band featured on the front of the magazine.

These are all generic conventions which are featured in all types of Music Magazine which make it stand out and effective for readers.

MAGAZINE ANALYSIS

This is a front cover of a college magazine. The name of this college is Beloit, which is the main heading of the cover, informing readers the name of the college. The title is bold, larger and clear, making it stand out and eye-catching. There is a lady on the cover where she is holding a beaker (prop), which is a mid shot. We can see her holding this beaker and in a science lab, which relates to the sub heading “doing science at Beloit”, this cover informs the reader that the magazine will be about studying science at Beloit. The word “science” is in bold which is done to emphasize that the main topic discussed in the magazine is about science.

Setting
The main subject is in which looks like a science lab, we know this because behind her there is a whiteboard with science information on it.
Costume
The lady is wearing normal clothes to show that in the college there is no uniform need to be worn.  She is also wearing protective goggles to make it look like she is doing an experiment, they have done this to make readers think that people studying science in Beloit, that there will be many experiments held and so intrigues potential students to study science.

Props
The denotation of this image is that it is a photograph of a student holding a beaker.
